Flava Nights @ Enigma, JW, Juhu

Finally, I manage to land at a Flava Nights @ Enigma, JW in Juhu. The reasons - friend invited, r n b & hip hop music and some free spirits (though not the best thing to have on a weekday). Initially decided to be home by 12am but reached only by 230am. Hope to visit again, sometime whenever :)

New Shopping Complex at Grant Hyatt

I new shopping complex which has come up in Grand Hyatt, Santa Cruz. Nothing great about it, but if you are looking to shop at a 5 star complex this is the place to be. Although my friend suggest the Oberoi shopping complex is better. Check it out :)

Touring Delhi

I've spent close to 10 years in Delhi before I moved out of the city to study and work...These are some of the places which you can/must visit while in Delhi.

This is Dilli Haat, a handicraft market near Sarojini Nagar...but primarily a youth hang out and tourist spot. The fruit beer is somewhat famous here. If you want to buy ethnic stuff...this is a good place to have a look.

This is the view of Connaught Place from Palika Bazaar. It's a big circle with lot' of shop and shopping to do, although I've rarely bought something for myself or anyone here...just donno why. But a good place to hangout and roam around.
Keventers and Wengers are 2 place you must stop if you want to get your hands on some confectioners and amazing flavored milk.

This is Centerstage Mall, Sector 18, Noida. Just like any other mall...but the specialty is the pub/disc on the 4/5 floor called Elevate...if you ever get a chance visit this place...no stags and the party beings at 10:30pm onward.

A day in Amritsar

Amritsar, a small city in the state of Punjab and the heart of the sikh culture and stuffed belly's (food is lip smacking). This is one city I make a effort each year to visit for it's warmth, food and my spirit. This was the shortest trip ever to Amritsar - was just there for 3 hours and then took a train back to Delhi.

The only public transport effective enough is a cycle rickshaw, and trust me they can reach good speeds. This is a view of the Hall Bazaar, one of the oldest shopping complex in the city. It too is getting it's share of malls. But nothing can take the experience of shopping in these stores...

The Golden Temple, a holy place for the Sikh Religion and one of the places in the country where my minds stops talking and starts to listen. We reached this place at around 1.45pm. The view from the Hall Bazaar entrance.

This guru is wearing the 5 yard turban, which very few can think of wearing and I guess are only allowed to wear after a certain level of devotion. But neverthe less, amazing stuff.

When you visit Punjab, everything is to be proud of. This was one thing I couldn't resist taking a picture of, something which I really hadn't seen in a long time and being away from the northern region.

Mr. Singh International!!! absolutely unbelievable. And, they have sponsorship too.

Respect!!!

Watch out women...here come's the stud.

Politics always come in between heaven and hell. Jalianwala Bagh was where one of the most tragic instances took place way back in the 90's, lot of people lost their lives for no reason...and the landmark still echoes of people who were there...spooky. But I hope you can see the context in the picture.

It was a short visit to the city and we were back in Delhi the same night...

Estimated Life

When I started blogging couple of months back, I thought I'll be a regular in posting events and activities in the life of a project manager. But soon I realised I over estimated my ability to put reality into words, now I really respect all those writers who write books I've never read.

Life was never this mechanical and not everything in my life was estimated, but now every move is thought twice and counted for. I know that's how businesses run, but not human. I see people around me just as good as machines with an expiry date or freshers just like a brand new car you don't want to push too much.

Ironically, individuals in between these 2 distinct points are the Project Managers, for many of us it is a game of productivity figures, I mean that's how I am suppose to calculate how much time will it take to complete the project and cost.

With increasing demand of the business to keep the knowledge flowing and have upto date info on how the business is doing, we upgrade to better systems which do not understand the human quotient. For the system it is the number which is the ultimate truth, it knows of no error except - human error.

So remember, somewhere some system has estimated your life...

I Write Because...

A very interesting poem I came across in one of the groups I subscribe to.

I Write Because..
C 2005
Julie Jordan Scott

I write for a simple reason.
Life is better whenI come to the page every day and
put strings of letters and words and trace the etchings of my heart with language
so that people will know that I was there.
I don't write seeking perfection in
grammar or brilliance in syntax.
I write because I know it is not a luxury,
it is a necessity.

I write because my soul longs to be heard
and it gives the message to my fingers tapping
on this keyboard who in turn "get" how important
it is to have a life that is witnessed by others.

I write because the process brings me to
a greater understanding of me.
I don't write to make anyone else happy or
entertain or to inspire. That sometimes comes
as a result, but that is more akin to sharing
the light and warmth of the sun orenjoying a star lit sky.

The sunlight and the starry sky and my words
all come from the same source. They come
from divine orchestration - and just like the
sun and the stars agree simply by being exactly
what they are, I agree to write because I am.

I am a writer.

And, I am a Project Manager :)

Talking e-mails

As a project manager your life depends and revoles around replying to a email or waiting for a reply from some one, this does not mean your profession is (likely) any different.

What interest's me the most is writing emails to individuals I've never seen or met, but thanks to the advances in human imagination and graphic skills most of us come equipped with - we start to create that virtual image of the person based on the name - as how it sounds (in our mind) and the gender, the voice of the person if you ever happen to have a call, and the email address it self !!!

And, then everytime you receive an email you start to imagin how that person would actually be thinking, what expressions s/he would have while typing, and a whole lot of stuff. As you read this blog and don't know me - your imagination is likely force you to draw a image - based on what i write, how i write, my name, the color scheme of the page - and most importantly what are you interpreting of the whole text on the screen.

Things were easy to recognise when you had hand written letters - one could figure what mood the person is in while writing the letter, how the text flows, the thought behind writing, and the jazz.

But with email, you shout with CAPITALS and you can always delete without leaving a mark on the page.

So next time you write an email, think of talking to that person while writing - you'll see some difference in the words you'll normally use. And, that's when you'll have your talking emails...

To be or Not to be Appraised...

I did learn about Maslow's theory of need and motivation, and other relating theories of motivating individuals to work and perform under given parameters, during my graduation and post graduation days. I along with others did attempt to apply that theory in many of the stints we've done, and seen it work at places. If you want to learn more - google for it.

But when you come to organisation life - this changes a bit; reason - age (for the more technical reader - maturity). As, we grow old in life our needs increases - it's not the other way round - ofcourse we are looking at cumulative need of recognition and money. And then, comes mid-life crisis - where virtually most of the things are either going too good or the inevitable becomes reality.

Where I work, it's not about old people, but about young talented individuals who have suddenly been exposed to the concept of relative grading and percentile (this does not goes in saying that I also understand the concept or I am on the higher level of the intellect scale or I am old, we'll never talk about that).

On the absolute front we all are talented individuals - what makes our talent vanish or deplete is the whole funda of comparison, productivity figures, and others questioning the ability of a creative person. But that's how business functions - procedures, policies, productivity and people. It's just that procedure and policy effect the people productivity (now count the number of "p" in this paragraph).

That's what appraisals are all about - a policy which initiates a procedure to help people improve their productivity (competitively). What you actually see at the end of it is some smiling faces and some facing inevitability.

And, life goes on...

Tweaking Numbers

Today, I write almost after a month. This does not goes to signify that I had lot's of work to finish, so I couldn't write about the exciting life of PM's. Well, actually it was more of work away from work.

Lives of many PM's around me haven't changed a bit, some when I returned looked thinner with the colors of their skin almost turning to white. It was not about projects, but a annual epidemic called "quality check". It happens every year just to ensure lives of many people will be better (probably), systems will function (hopefully), and the cash register will ring when the next cheque arrives (affirmative). Stuff which I again read during MBA.

Many companies strive to achieve the SIXth sigma, it's a zone of nirvana for the operation guys - who dream of producing only 3.4 error(s) amongst a million productive units. Many individuals who get smarter in tweaking productivity numbers get belt's in different color - just like in karate. Just that you are practicing a discipline of improving processes.

Trust me, it is yet to make the lives of the people working in that process better, I like karate over six sigma practices.

Untill then - practise self discipline :)

Million Dollar Resource

I don't intend to market the recent flick with the similar name, but as a project manager your resource (individual) on the project is worth a lot of money in terms of the bills you pay to your shrink (depression, anxiety and fear of loosing the resource.)

I always thought that guys in sales or marketing face a lot of action, but to my new experience a lot of action also takes place in operations - this time more to do with people you already have and should be working for the organisation - surprisingly many of them are the rope in a tug-of-resource-war.

Management terms it as "organisation dynamics", let me term it "bull****"*. It's hard to say who works and doesn't, you can choose to apply the pereto theory of 80:20 or your own grandma recipe, bottomline this is where you are and this is what you have - "manage"

Another million dollar resource is - time. In project management we estimate time based on number of people working simultaneously to get the job done technically time gets classified as man-months, man-days, man-hours, etc. but later the man-is-not-found. In reality time remains time, no human can defy it; not even project management.

But just like the movie, a PM is very close to his team/people; some team choose to work along, and some the PM needs to drag along. This relation creates a strong bond between people, it overlooks the management-scientific measurements involved in calculating efficiency or defects - what it results is in a creation where all of them worked together...and achieved something.

Which is worth much more than a million dollars...

* No offense to any management guru's or lectures I've attended. I still strongly want to test many theories I've read in the classroom.

Zzzzzzip...

I wish I could share ordeals of other PM's then of my fellow PM, who always manage's to ask for some event in his life. This time it was not his team member but the client.

Most of us will pray once a week or once in a bluemoon, a PM prays everytime he sends a delivery to his client, actually the prayers never ends, it plays at the back of many minds.

So, on the fateful night my PM just like any other honest and supporting one, uploads a zip file (know more about zip files later) on the file server for the client to download and review the works. Tada, the zip file zips it's way to the client...

Now...

A conversation begins between my fellow PM and the client's participant* (CP).

PM: Hi.

CP: Hi, thank you for uploading the file. But this is a zip file.

PM (Thinking - "so???"): Yes, it is.

CP: How do I use this file???

PM (Scratching his head, willing to shoot the questioning person at sight): Just simply unzip the file.

CP: How can you unzip the file?

PM (Visualizing pressing the trigger): Use Winzip...

CP: No, no, no...please upload seperate files again.

PM (Visualizing shooting multiple bullets) : there are over 100 files, it'll take me a lot of time to upload.

CP: I understand the effort you are putting in, please upload all files.

PM: Give me a moment...

In the meanwhile, he calls up the client manager and ask for help, his response "the customer is always right"...

Irony, is for real :)

*PS: The CP has 10 years of experience in this line of business !!!

Note: No human, animal or computer was harmed in this event.

Sleeping with estimation...

[Rated R - Explicit Content, Parental Advise Recommended]

Never in my wildest of dreams I'd thought I'll be sleeping with estimations in my dream. Hmmm...yeah, I'll term this syndrome as estdreamation (dreaming about estimation sheets) and am sure that's the new word that oxford needs to consider for their next dictionary release apart from sms meanings.

I mean, I am not that comfortable with numbers and I land up spending most of my day juggling with numbers. To top it all, I really haven't seen any of my numbers come to life; this of course is because I am yet to go live on a project. So, whatever I do today must mean something tomorrow. It's more or less like planning for how hard, how long and how much will the axe hurt, when it hits your foot. (Yikeees!!!)

Am, sure I'll have more episodes of "Sleeping with estimation" than the episode count of "Kyunki Saas bhi kabhi bahu thi" or "Sex, and the City"...

The week begins...but delayed

Oh, i missed to write the blog yesterday... it was my day filled with excitement. I somehow don't agree on writing words like "busy" or "hectic", they don't have that much fun in it.

The Monday or Mournday whichever you choose came, lot's of happy faces morphing to shocked faces as they started their day (here's it's your email which greets you). I was too excited to change my facial expression :)

Most of the day was spent working with some of the most brilliant minds I've ever come across, sadly my organisation chooses to call them "resources"; if I were given a chance I would have called them guru's. Some have mastered their art, and some are in the process of it. Whatever you say, it's fun being around. I wish I could work closely with most of them, and learn along.

The rest of the day was spent on an excel sheet, tweaking productivity figures for a possible project...bottom line "how we maximise profits in view of the effort". Don't scratch your head, even I was scratching mine while working on the excel sheet, didn't get a thing but managed to finish something.

The day went by pretty fast, and at 930 in the night, I caught my self taking pictures and posting them (check out the profile - yikees!!! i look plump)

Will write more as the action takes place...

Blog Friday!!!

After hurriedly typing a gizllion email, attending production and team meetings, and the phone. I do resort to perform my (painful for reader) ritual of typin my blog...

My fellow PM did not manage to return home on time, and last I heard was a scream when he was returned home, guess it was around mid-night (he stays in the same building, where I stay). Sigh...

-----> Snooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooz

We returned to work, and guess what F.R.I.D.A.Y. is HERE...

Who wanna work?

NO ONE :)

(I am thinking of a full form for the acroynm for F.R.I.D.A.Y but later)

Hour later after our arrival at the desk, we decide to meet at the coffee table to share our voes again, I kept quiet and decided to listen. This time around an interesting story came up from the guy who left at mid-night...

There's this project he's working on, and his resource was asked to review a Video for him. Although, his resource was half excited to finish the work, but never the less started to do his task. After a while, the phone rings and this resource says..."dude, there's no audio in the video"...the PM panics and rushes to his desk...even he is startled as to what went wrong!!!

For half-an-hour they both scratch their heads and try to figure out what went wrong with the audio...

Pop comes a voice from behind "dada, headphones kothay" (bengali-english-translation: dude, you are not wearing the head-phones)

now what do I say, we bursted out laughing...poor man a.k.a PM :)

The Coffee Break

As I went for my coffee break, I took along my fellow PM's who's eyes are about to pop out after continuous stare at the screen, and some of them now see the real world in 1024x768 resolution and preferred to carry their Inboxes with them.

After, a sigh of relief we all manage to grab a cup-of-coffee and discuss the mundane issues and problems we usually face and the last time we didn't face any is hard to recollect. We all babble jargons of efforts, resources, documentation, conference-calls, etc. just to sound knowledgeable; otherwise project management has done good stuff to our IQs. I have lost track of it totally.

As we return to our designated starting line (or desks or cubicles or concentration cells, whatever), starting point because this is where the chase for resources begins, I pop'd a question..."dude, what time heading home?"...I got my million dollar question's answer. "I am planning to leave, half past 9pm. Let's hope I can make it"

Will he leave half past 9pm or half past mid-night?

Oh, and the rare gems, I was telling the truth, couldn't find any of them...more later...

Reality Check

Although, I was/am excited being a Project Manager (PM). It's just that I discover new abilities of oneself, as we go along performing the roles of a PM.

It never occurred to me that availability of an individual or more aptly titled "RESOURCE" in a competitive business world, can actually measured in percentages and all of us over perform keeping in mind the brackets of 100% allocation...still can't conclude are we over-capable or 100% can be quantified 100% of your life time in the organization !!!

Let's not forget, a resource can not be a resource unless it matches the skill requirement of a project.

Ok, I know I am not making much sense here, and it's the same case with me, even I can't make much sense of what I am writing.

So, in situations of confusion and finer elements of text, we bring along a smarter and more experienced resource, a Specialist...these are the rare gems in the organization who are actually rare* to find, either they are on leave or are not on their seats or they are allocated in such a manner that 100% is just to less to quantify their efforts in PM terminology. More on the rare gems, after a coffee break :)

*Note: I have all the respect on the planet for all my fellow human beings in the organisation. I mean no harm in any manner, unless otherwise asked for.

Notice the "url"

If you take a close look at the URL of this blog its "pmslife.blogspot.com", trust me PMS is a part of PM's life :) and that's what I intended to write in this blog.

Incase, your dirty thoughts have started to take over your brains, PMS means Physical and Mental Stress !!! unless your are a girl PM (due respect to the opposite sex)...

It all sounds like super human stuff, but if project management was rocket science, I wouldn't be alive to write this blog...
